As an unknown videomaker (at least I didn't know him before), Dex has been able to come up with a clean and authentic production for his first IMC participation.

He made the decision to work on a specific theme (Time), what led to a much consistent and accomplished video. This choice to deal with time shows in 3 ways :

    - He picked up a very fitting soundtrack.

    - The frozen time all along the video lets us see only immobile cars

    - Multiple quotes about Time make this production quite original

The whole production is necessarily slow, what could have bored the viewer. But Dex has been able to get around this probem with a smooth camera, chilling music that gets us in the approriate mood to enjoy the vid, and quotes that make us hooked and want to know what is going the next one to tell us. The visual quality is very enjoyable, with an old film effect that is remarkable but not tiresome.

To sum it up, this is a nice production without any particular flaw.

I hope to see Dex again in future IMC!

  • 2ndThis is TMUFKilla ProD.14/20

    The judges comments

This is the first time Killa joins IMC, although we already know him through the videos he already posted on TM-Tube. He chose not to take too much risks and submitted a quite standard video, with its usual good and less good points.

It is the only full TMUF video of this IMC, what raises good memories and allows environment switching. The concept is actually simple and not so ambitious : make a presentation of the game and its community aspects.

There are a few flaws that tarnish the global quality of this production. Cameras are indeed not fully mastered : most of the time, it is just a basic anchor, although some sequences are more dynamic and well done. It also happens that the camera path goes through some scenery parts, what is unpleasant and could have been avoided. Transitions between the different environments are not so clean, it looks like it was made a bit too quick. More work and patience could have make this video much better. Yet, it is already consistent and good looking for a first try. On a side note, the music was not really my taste, maybe because it's a bit overused (but it got stuck into my head after a while).

All in all, this production is pretty enjoyable, despite its not so good technical realization. I count on Killa to go on and keep shooting, because he still has an interesting room for improvement.

Although SiH is already famous among the TrackMania videomakers, this is only his second IMC participation. After his tight win against Darkpuddle during IMC4, he delivers for IMC5 a video that seems to lack of inspiration, and does not really impress.

The concept is quite similar to the Canyon announcement trailer made by Sprint, but it has less style. There is not enough work and variations in the scenery, and the day mood is in my opinion not good to set a nice atmosphere. Yet, the camera work is well done and flawless, and a few interesting ideas show up now and then (such as the car that crashes in multiple cars on the hills). But it then gets a bit boring because of not enough originality and energy. However, the music is a bit surprising at the first view, but it is actually a good choice that saves a bit the atmosphere.

SiH was definitely not top when he made this video, simply too banal - but good on a technical point of view. No doubts that he can do much better.

    The judges comments

Meuh is now quite famous among the TrackMania videomakers for being one of the most imaginative and funny creators around here. His IMC5 production is not an exception to the rule.

    Frustration.

...is the first word that came to my mind after watching his video. At first, a bad frustration, the frustration of a viewer that didn't get what he expected. Then, a good frustration, the frustration that is understood by the judge as he knows the videomaker absolutely wanted it to happen.

Meuh found an idea that made me smile and feel enthusiastic from the first seconds. To make a single cam video, what could be smarter than telling the story of a real videocamera ? A videocamera that is bored of its life, and dreams of another landscape shining thru its lens.

Yet, the realization is questionable. It depends on what point of view you watch this video. It starts all good, with a friendly voice-over, but the excitation of the viewer falls down rapidly during the second part that is too flat and monotone. Let's say it cleary, for a random viewer, this is not a video that you want to watch over and over again, rather just a production that you are curious to see once. But from an artistic point of view, we have to admit that Meuh made a great work and managed to interact with the viewer. The frustration of this poor camera is such a pain that the viewer is forced to feel it through the video, becoming impatient, willing to see some variations and changes that won't actually happen. Once the video is over, you just realize you have seen something confusing and yet very deep at the same time.

As usual, Meuh won't make every viewer happy and satisfied, but he has made for sure a very original work, what is a great quality and quite rare in this IMC edition. I count on him to go on and spice up IMC in the future.

    The judges comments

Darkpuddle is a videomaker I didn't know until IMC4, when he surprised us with his 2nd place. He then realized Annihilation, a machinima that made him more famous. He comes back for IMC5, with a production that makes quite the same effect as SiH's one : not bad, but not really inspired or remarkable.

Since he made the choice of working on Canyon, Darkpuddle was assured of a good visual quality, and knew how to exploit it with mood variations, with especially some night scenes that look great with the chosen music! This soundtrack is also very adapted to the slow motion style of this video, to create a smooth atmosphere. However, the physics of Canyon are obviously not good enough for such a concept, because there are numerous crash scenes where we can see the car acting strange with the scenery (and sometimes even going through it). It's not the fault of the videomaker, but we can still wonder if this slow motion choice was a good idea, and if he should have better made something different than accidents due to heavy rain. Talking about the rain, I must say it is very well rendered in the beginning, but it then disappears in the rest of the video, to finally come back on the very end. It's a pity, since it makes us forget why all these cars are actually crashing, and the atmosphere is less impressive without rain. About the cameras, I regret that some scenes are not very interesting, but some great angles happen now and then, such as the view from above of a Zonda jumping over a canyon. Anyway, the MT is technically well done, nothing to say about that.

Darkpuddle seems to have had a small lack of inspiration on this video, that ends up being uneven. It had more potential with a bit more reflexion, but it is all in all still a clean and professionnal production.

    The judges comments

Timae is a loyal participant to the IMC series and didn't want to miss this edition. Yet, he delivered an unfinished video. It's a pity, since there was much potential in it.

To use ingame signs and go trough them to switch smoothly from an environment to another, was the best thing to do to combine a lot of variations and a "single" camera path in one video. Yet, I am disappointed by the realization, what consists of a gross superposition of shots over the original signs. It's a bit shaky, not so clean, so the strong point of this video looks a bit cheap. I personaly would have used a uniform color for the signs and applied the green screen technique to make them transparent and let the background shot appear with a very clear shape. That said, the render is still interesting and makes a good impression, I would like it to be longer to have a more precise opinion about this production.

The soundtrack is very well chosen, there is nothing to say about the atmosphere. But I don't really like the display of lyrics at the end of the clip... In the current state of things (unfinished video), it looks like it's just there to gain some time and fill the video a bit more. Maybe it will look good in the final video, as a transition phase, I don't know yet.

This video had the potential to do a nice score in this IMC, but it is unfortunately not finished.

I hope to see Timae in a good shape for his next participations.
